THE AIR LEAGUE CELEBRATES ITS CENTENARY
The Air League was founded in 1909 to promote interest and opportunities in aviation. For 100 years it has been liaising with the Government, Parliament, the Armed services, local authorities and the press to offer flying scholarships and bursaries. It has been responsible for creating many successful aviation careers and has contributed to the growth and development of aviation both civil and military.
His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, Patron of The Air League, held a reception at Buckingham Palace on Thursday 4th June 2009 to thank supporters of The League and celebrate the Centenary. |
Shari Peyami, Managing Director of Wycombe Air Centre, represented The Cabair group at the reception and is shown above, talking with HRH Prince Philip.
The Duke expressed his appreciation of the support both The Cabair Group and Wycombe Air Centre have given in promoting Air League worthy causes.
For more photographs of the reception, see the official Air league web site here. |

WAC Club Trip to Thruxton for Go-Karting : Trip Review
April 2009
Club aircraft took to the skies on a sunny Thursday afternoon to fly over to Thruxton for a Club Trip to go go-karting.
|
 |
 |
8 people came on the trip; including 4 club members, 4 passengers and 1 brave instructor!
The track was booked for 2 o'clock and the track was all ours for the afternoon. Once everyone had kitted themselves out with racing suits, balaclavas, gloves and a helmet they took us all outside to brief us on our very small but very fast machines. Average time for a lap around the circuit was just over a minute - 1 minute being a quick lap, and 1 minute or less being very fast indeed. |
 |
The go-kart club let us loose on 8 65mph go-karts around the tight and fast outdoor circuit. After about 10 laps of very competitive track racing the finishing flag was finally waved and we had to head back to the pit lane to collect our times, and for the fastest 3 guys of the day to take their well deserved places on the podium!
Thank you to the Thruxton Go-Kart club for a very enjoyable day, Thruxton and Boscombe ATC for their helpful services, and thanks to all the members and friends that came to support the trip. The trip was a huge success and well enjoyed by all that attended. I'm sure that later in 2009 the club will be venturing back out on the track for another version of the British GP! |

Tempelhof Trip Report [See Photo gallery - here]
Tempelhof (EDDI) is a huge and very nostalgic airfield set right in the centre of Berlin. Sadly Tempelhof is closing in October of this year, so we decided we ought to have a club trip to visit before it shuts.
Friday the 5th September saw 6 of our club aircraft take to the skies to head off on the epic adventure. Of the 6 aircraft that went 3 were Cessna 172s, 1 of which was sporting the G1000 kit. Along side the 172s we had a C182 G1000, a Beech Duchess' and one of our new Beech Sierras attend as well. 18 people attended the trip, of that 16 were crew (5 of which were instructors) with 2 passengers.
Our half way point to stop was Munster Osnabruck (EDDG) which is a large airfield compared to most visited by GA pilots. Munster has a lot of commerical and corporate flights along with General Aviation as well. Once full of fuel again we headed off from Munster to Tempelhof. |
On the Saturday our group splitted up into a couple of smaller groups to go and look around Berlin. Some of our members went off to Gatow to visit the Luftwaffe aircraft musuem. For most others it was their first visit to Berlin so they ended up doing the tour of the city. One group ended up doing it on Segways, some people decided to do the bicycle tour and 2 of our members even hired a rickshaw to tour the city. All in all everyone kept themselves well occupied for the day and enjoyed seeing the sights in and around Berlin. We finished the evening with a group meal in a very nice restaurant a few minute walk from the City Centre.
Sunday morning marked our last day in Germany and an early start for our return journey. With all the weather, paperwork and customs complete we headed off back to Wycombe with a stop at Munster again for fuel.
On arrival at Wycombe we finished the day with a barbeque with lots of bratwurst and knockwurst sausage!!!!
The trip was a huge success and was well enjoyed by all. All our members that went are looking forward to the next trip - only problem being what can we do to beat this trip…"wait and see" we said…
If anyone would like info on the trip please feel free to contact us at Wycombe Air Centre on info@wycombeaircentre.co.uk

Isle of Man TT Trip Report- Saturday 31st May 2008 [See Photo gallery - here]
Unusually for the Isle of Man TT there was no fog to be seen on the day of the races as we headed off to the Isle of Man to watch the Senior TT racing. Instead of the traditional TT fog a slightly hazy but glorious sunny day of welcomed us to depart early and allowed our trip to go ahead.
Five aircraft, piloted by seven crew accompanied by their passengers all made it to the Isle of Man on the day. A few hiccups arose in the morning with the usual flight plans changes and the filling of customs forms, making it a busy start to the day. Without too much delay eventually all five aircraft made the trip and touched down safe and sound in Ronaldsway around mid morning. Of those aircraft were a Cessna 172, two Beech Duchess' and two of our members privately owned machines, flying a various mix of routes to and from the island, some IFR and some VFR.
Our members headed off and explored the island for the day, witnessing some stunning racing action from the grandstand and various other locations over the island race course, whilst taking in the Isle of Mans' breathtaking scenic views and the fantastic lunches! |
| A great day was had by all, some great motorcycle racing was seen and some superb photos were taken. Our thanks to the Isle of Man air traffic and handling agent for all their help, they made us all feel most welcome. We certainly will be holding a club trip to the TT again next year... |

The Wycombe Flyers is open to all club members and students.
We plan to make regular trips and fly-ins. Whether you've had your licence longer than you care to remember or whether you're still learning navigation it's great to fly to new places and to share the experience with fellow club members.
Yeovilton
A tour enjoyed by all. Not the best of weather, so there was an IMC or IR rated pilot in all four Wycombe aircraft that departed for the Fleet Air Arm Museum.
Cosford
The early morning mist cleared to a glorious summer day. Four aircraft made the trip to visit the new Cold War Museum.
Bruntingthorpe
The week after the Vulcan's first flight we were privileged to be able to visit Bruntingthorpe. Many club members will remember flying past this airfield on their qualifying cross country flights. But very few people have landed there. It's a very busy motor industry test facility and is only available on a strict PPR basis. We teamed up with the IBM flying club and a total of 14 aircraft made the visit. We had a most interesting briefing from Chief Engineer Andrew Edmondson and were able to closely inspect XH558 in her hangar. It's a fascinating story - see for yourself on www.tvoc.co.uk
We're open to suggestions for 2008. If you have any personal contacts who can open doors for us, then please let Kevin Duthie know …
Suggestions so far - no promises as we haven't checked them out with the airfield operators yet:
Lundy Island (Farm Strip in the Bristol Channel)
Wroughton (Imperial War Museum)
Chalgrove (Martin Baker)
Brimpton (Autumn Fly-In)
Gliding (Either at Wycombe or at Weston on the Green near Bicester.)
Let us know your e-mail address so you can be added to the weekly touring group mailing list. Details of forthcoming trips will also be posted on the Touring Group notice board.
