PPL Ground School

PPL Classroom

What Exams!?

For the issue of either the PPL there is a requirement to pass the following ground examinations:

  • Air Law
  • Human Performance and Limitations
  • Meteorology
  • Aircraft Technical and Principles of Flight
  • Flight Performance and Planning
  • Navigation
  • Communications

It is also necessary to pass a practical radio-telephony examination with an RT examiner. The exam papers are multiple-choice with a pass mark of 75%. You must then complete your PPL flight training within 24 months of passing the last exam in the series.

What is the best way to pass the exams?

There is no requirement to attend a formal groundschool as the exams can be self-studied. However, Wycombe Air Centre highly recommends students to attend our in-house groundschool course where a dedicated groundschool instructor can focus learning in the relevant areas and answer any queries that you may have then and there.

The main groundschool runs on Thursday evenings and starts at about 1845 hours and runs through until about 2100 hours with a generous coffee break at the half-way point! Individual one-on-one groundschool can also be arranged at times and dates to suit you.

Groundschool is a great way of covering the syllabus in the most efficient way with a highly knowledgeable and dedicated groundschool instructor and most students find it easier to pass the exams this way than by ploughing through the text books alone.

Another great plus is the fact that you will get to know the other PPL students on the course and many flying partnerships have been borne out of groundschool friendships!

How do I start?

There is a sign-up sheet in reception for our own students. If you are signed up for either the PPL package, your groundschool costing is included in the price. If you are a “pay as you fly” student please contact us for information.

If you fly elsewhere but would like to do the groundschool at Wycombe Air Centre, you are most welcome – contact us for details of when each subject begins as it is best to begin at the beginning of a subject rather than trying to catch up half way through!
