JAR PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE (JAA PPL)

G-WACY

The Private Pilot Licence (PPL) course is the first stage of flight training for a modular student and will lay the foundations of how to fly and navigate that will then be built on during the rest of your flight training.
This course can be delivered on either our Cessna 152 or Piper Warrior.

Pre-entry requirements

None, although you may wish to consider a Trial Lesson before you commit to the course, just to check that you love flying as much as we do! This option is credited towards the full licence requirements and so are never a waste of time. You do not need a medical certificate before you begin the course but you will need one before you fly solo. We would highly recommend our modular students to get their Class 1 medical early on in their training just in case there are any issues and also so that there is nothing standing in your way when you are ready to take to the skies without your instructor!

The Course

The minimum flying requirement for a JAA PPL is a total time of 45 hours including:

  • 25 hours dual flight training with a qualified JAA Instructor
  • 10 hours solo flight of which 5 hours are solo cross country (including one qualifying cross country flight which includes landing at two other airfields)
  • 10 hours either solo or dual as required (usually dual)
  • Skill Test with an examiner to check your flight and navigation skills
  • Groundschool

There are seven written ground examinations to pass and one radiotelephony practical test, all of which can be completed with our in-house examiners. Please see the Groundschool information for more details on the requirements and ways to study.

What if I already have an PPL?

If you already have a JAA PPL you do not need to complete this module.
Please Note: There are currently two types of PPL. If your intention is to progress through modular training towards a commercial licence, you will need to have a JAR PPL. If you already have a NPPL, there are easy upgrade options – please contact us for details.
